2001 Homicide Bombing at Tel Aviv Disco

2-June-2001

A Palestinian Homicide Bomber killed 16 people and injured dozens of others in a terror attack at a Tel Aviv night club.

An Israeli police official said that a suicide bomber, with an explosive device packed with bullets and nails, apparently mingled with the crowd and then "blew himself up at the entrance to the club."

An announcement on Abu Dhabi television said Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian militant group, claimed responsibility.

The Israeli government put the blame on Yasir Arafat, the Palestinian leader. "There is no doubt that Arafat can control these things," Danny Naveh, a cabinet minister, told CNN.

The previous weekend, a car bomb exploded in a nightclub area of Jerusalem and a second bomb exploded the next morning. Three other explosions took place in Israeli cities over the course of the week.
